The Oyo state police command has denied it released a 43-year-old man, Christian Anyanwu, who was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl, Rodiyah, in his apartment situated along Agbowo express in Ibadan, the state capital.
Recall that on Thursday, LIB shared the story of an elderly woman, Iyabode Olatunji, who cried out for justice after a man allegedly raped her granddaughter, Rodiyah, and got her son, Sakiru, arrested.
In a viral video, Madam Olatunji said Rodiyah goes about to sell Kerosine and that whenever she sells for the accused, he will ask her to go into his house to bring something for him. Whenever she goes in, the accused will offer her N100 and then rape her. This went on for a while. Madam Olatunji said Sakiru came back home from work and caught the man raping Rodiyah.
Twitter user @AlaOluwaseun who shared the story online, said Madame Olatunji told him that the accused got her son arrested while he is walking around freely.
Yesterday, LIB reached out to the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Fadeyi Olugbenga, and he said he couldn't confirm the incident. However, we reached out to him today and he confirmed it.
Speaking in a telephone interview, SP Olugbenga said Sakiru took three other boys to the house of the accused, beat him mercilessly leaving him with serious injuries. Thereafter, he took the accused to the police station to report the matter. It was the police officers at the station who arrested Sakiru for taking the laws into his hands. SP Olugbenga said both the alleged rapist and Sakiru will be charged to court for different cases.
The case is being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department. When Sakiru got the information that the man was assaulting Rodiyah, he went with three other men in company of Rodiyah and he assaulted the man instead of calling the attention of the police. They beat him mercilessly. His left ear bulged out, his right cheek was swollen and his right eye filled with blood stain. That is jungle justice in which we have been warning that we will not fold our arms and allow complete break down of law and order. Why will he take the laws into his hands? Thereafter, he took the accused to the police station. When the police saw the accused, they said nobody gave him, Sakiru, the power to assault him. He is supposed to report him to the police to arrest and investigate and if found culpable, he will be charged and the court will give him the necessary term. He went and implicated himself. The police is now investigating two cases now. One case is that of defilement with that Christian Anyanwu and at the same Sakiru's case which is Assault Ocassioning Harm. He took some persons there and beat the man mercilessly. I went there today and saw it.The suspect is in the state CID. He is still being detained. Sakiru has been granted bail but the case continues and if possible, they will be changed individually on their own cases.'The case is still under investigation' he said
